Teen Drivers - Tragic Statistics
Traffic accidents are now the number 1 cause of death to teenagers in the US. It is certainly a scary fact.
All mothers and fathers feel
anxious when their teenage child starts driving on it's own and much
more so when its raining.
Statistically, young motorists are much more likely to cause an accident
in a poor driving condition. Lack of experience could be fatal.
That is why teenage drivers should be informed and given proper instructions concerning how to drive when its raining.
Bad Weather
As a parent, its your obligation to make your child aware how bad weather and fog have an effect on driving.
The 2 most significant factors are road surface and visibility. The majority of youngsters do not realise that in rainy conditions the breaking distance is three times longer than on a dry road.
Breaks must be used much more cautiously, especially when skidding and aquaplaning occurs. It is safer to allow more driving time while it is raining and avoid rushing. The key is to drive slowly.
Creating Habits
Keeping toward the center lanes helps as well, simply because water
tends to pool in the outside lanes. Driving in the tracks of the vehicle
ahead may seem natural to an experienced driver, but young motorists
may need a few pointers.
Visibility is very frequently reduced and all necessary measures must be
taken. The windshield must be clear and use of defrosters is advised.
Its a good habit to turn on your front lights, even when there's a gentle sprinkle. A particular attention must be paid to people on the streets and people who are riding bikes.
Some Wise Tips...
Its a wise idea for young adults to be accompanied the first few times when driving a car while it's raining. Encouraging safety and preventing bad driving habits can be invaluable down the road.
Even the smallest car accident can leave a black mark on one's driving record, which could make obtaining affordable car insurance a problem.
Make sure the car is in a very good condition, including the tires and windshield wipers. Suggest to your teen taking part in an advanced driving program.

I had no idea that teens driving more than just a couple of other teens could increase the chances for an accident by that much. Not all that surprising I suppose.
